Der CompactPCI Serial nutzt die mechanisch die Merkmale des bewährten CompactPCI und ist damit zu 100% IEEE 1101 konform. Im Gegensatz zu seinem Vorgänger verwendet CompactPCI Serial ausschließlich serielle Punkt-zu-Punkt-Verbindungen zwischen den einzelnen Slots. Der 2 mm hart-metrische Steckverbinder des CPCI ist durch einen moderneren und kompakteren Stecker ersetzt worden, welcher es ermöglicht, unterschiedliche serielle Signale von 10 Gb/s seriell und mehr zu verarbeiten.
